History and Accomplishments

MANNA is a coalition of people from all parts of the Nashville community-from religious leaders to those in danger of hunger-who are united behind the idea that it takes more than a box of food to end hunger. We come together with the understanding that hunger is a symptom of poverty, and we work to educate and mobilize all members of the community to attack the root causes of hunger.

In 2000 MANNA celebrated 25 years of fighting hunger from the grassroots level. We are proud of our organization's many accomplishments.

  • We fought for and won a state mandated School Breakfast Program.
  • We advocated for and brought the WIC program to Nashville.
  • We started one of the first Child-Care Food Programs in the South.
  • We organized the coalitions that created the Tennessee Hunger Coalition
and Nashville's Second Harvest Food Bank.
  • Since 1989, our Food Stamp Outreach Program has helped thousands of people receive food stamps, adding $2 million to the dinner tables of Nashville's poor.
  • Our public policy successes over the years include fundamental improvements
in the food stamp program and advocating for rights of welfare participants.
  • Today we still work for improved access to food and benefit programs through outreach, individual advocacy, public policy work, education, and community organizing.
