SOME HIGHLIGHTS

1975

A community group met at Dialogue House to discuss domestic
and world hunger...decided to form an organization:MANNA

1976 Hired staff person, Janet Christianson (now Janet Wolf)
1977

Staff involvement in national advocacy...

  • Formulating the Food Stamp Act
  • Started organizing a statewide network (TN Hunger Coalition)
  • Organized the coalition that started the Nashville Second Harvest Food Bank
  • Started the Child Care Food Program

1978

Local organizing campaign around School Breakfast, food for elderly;
Nutrition education (Eclipse of the Blue Moon Food)

1979

Contract with state to do Food Stamp Outreach

1980

TN Hunger Coalition and MANNA became separate organizations

1981

Cuts in federal budget resulted in cuts in poverty and food programs,
and in MANNA staff (VISTA, CETA)
1982 Local School Breakfast organizing campaign, Food Stamp monitoring and advocacy, CCFP (Child Care Food Program) continued, dealing with cuts in funding
1983 State School Breakfast campaign local School Breakfast mandate passed, Started campaign to bring WIC to Nashville

1984

State School Breakfast mandate passed, WIC started in Nashville on pilot basis
1985 Expansion of WIC in Nashville

1986-88

Work to take sales tax off food --TFT (Tennesseans for Fair Taxation) started

1989

Federal matching funds for Food Stamp Outreach available...Started our FSO project work on welfare reform (AFDC Coalition)
